Mets rumors: New York could call up Ronny Mauricio

At 22 years old and in Triple-A, Ronny Mauricio is just one step away from Queens.

Mauricio is a capable shortstop who can also move around the infield, which is likely the Mets plan with him considering Francisco Lindor is their long-term plan at short. Having Mauricio play second or third base, for example, would allow him a more obvious path to a major-league starting job.

While capable defensively, Mauricio’s bat has improve year after year, and he’s started off the 2023 campaign red hot. Mauricio is slashing 355/.403/.790 in Syracuse with six home runs and 14 RBIs. If he continues to hit like that, New York will have a tough time keeping him stashed in the minor leagues.

Mauricio does tend to expand the zone some, which is an issue he must work on long-term. For now, the Mets are comfortable using his 6-3 frame at shortstop, though he received some looks at third base in the Dominican league this winter.

If New York were to promote Mauricio, which is expected at some point this season, another infielder is likely to go down. While not the most interesting answer, it’s unclear who that would be at this juncture, as it’ll likely depend on injuries and depth at specific positions.
