Strangest Raiders of all time: 2. Desmond Howard

Desmond Howard is known for so many things. He set or tied five NCAA records during his college seasons at the University of Michigan. He was such an insane dual threat, possibly the best kick returner of all time adding in a great receiving threat, that he won the Heisman Trophy in 1991. His biggest contribution was popularizing the “Heisman Pose” as a touchdown celebration.

He was drafted into the NFL in 1992 by Washington. They took him fourth overall in the NFL Draft with a ton of fanfare. Through three seasons there, Washington didn’t really know what to do with him. They tried to make him a full-time receiver in his third year, but it was clear his biggest impact would come as a returner.

He would spend one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after they took him in the Expansion Draft, before his most important professional season with the Green Bay Packers. The Pack just knew how to use Howard, and he had the most famous kick return in Super Bowl history.

Coming off that season, Howard immediately signed with the Raiders. He signed a four-year deal worth $6 million but was gone after two. He went back to the Packers, but that didn’t work either. Howard was fine in Oakland, but many expected him to be the game-breaker he was in his first Green Bay experience.
