Patriots rumors: 3 intriguing trades for 49ers QB Trey Lance
By Ryan Heckman
The Patriots are known to make bold moves, and going after 49ers quarterback Trey Lance could be one of them
Wednesday morning, it was official. The San Francisco 49ers are taking calls on quarterback Trey Lance. So, that begs the question, should the New England Patriots make a call?
Bill Belichick is not sold on his own former first-round quarterback, Mac Jones, according to some earlier reports this offseason. If New England isn’t committed to Jones, then that means they’re either high on Bailey Zappe, or they’re looking to make a move.
That move? It very well could be for the former No. 3 overall pick. But, that would mean taking a chance on a guy who has appeared in only eight career games over two years. The NFL hardly has film on him, meaning the Patriots don’t even fully know what he’s capable of doing. Yet, the move still might be worth it.
Even some local media out in Boston think the Patriots should go after Lance.
So, if New England were to make an offer for Lance, what would that look like?
A recent report suggested that the price tag wouldn’t be nearly as high as what the 49ers paid to move up and draft the former North Dakota State standout. The price: two second-round picks. That’s it.
3. The Patriots oblige, giving the 49ers their rumored price for Trey Lance
The very first trade gives San Francisco exactly what they are reportedly looking for. New England sends their second-rounder this year, coming at no. 46 overall, plus a second-rounder next year, to acquire Lance.
From here on out, it’s all on Lance’s shoulders to outperform Zappe, whom Patriots fans got a glimpse of last year and saw some flashes. Lance is supposed to be ready for the majority of off-season work, shortly, and should be ready to go Week 1.
If the 49ers wanted more, or something a little different, the Patriots could go in another direction.
