Strangest Broncos of all time: 1. Jerry Rice

The strangest legend in Denver ever was Jerry Rice. Rice had a few strange stops at the end of his career, but nothing was like his time in Denver. He signed with Denver for just $790,000 in 2005. He played through training camp, and he still had something.

Rice was still able to move past the competition in the Broncos’ receiving room. He passed Darius Watts because he was able to avoid making mistakes. In his preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, the team that made Rice a star, he only had one catch for eight yards. He did have Bradlee Van Pelt throwing to him, so it wasn’t really his fault.

Rice went catchless in the next preseason game, and it was apparent his place on the roster didn’t really fit. The Broncos considered keeping him, but they wanted their fourth receiver to play special teams, and the veteran didn’t have the skills to do that at this point in his career.

There’s no argument that Rice is the greatest wide receiver of all time. He might be the best skill player to ever play the sport. However, the ending to his career was just like many stars, forgettable.
