The Los Angeles Angels already took a hit with star rookie Logan O’Hoppe going down, but the latest injury update is even worse than expected.

Los Angeles Angels rookie catcher Logan O’Hoppe started to show some discomfort with his non-throwing shoulder during the series against the Boston Red Sox but decided to keep playing through it.

Late in the Thursday, April 20 game against the New York Yankees, O’Hoppe hit a single and then was taken out of the game where he was in obvious pain. The Angels placed the outstanding catcher on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation on Friday.

The latest update, however, creates a much more disheartening situation.

Angels news: Logan O’Hoppe could miss rest of regular season

Further tests were done on Logan O’Hoppe where it was discovered that he had a torn labrum in his left shoulder. With this type of injury, surgery is going to be required to repair it and it will put O’Hoppe out of action anywhere between 4-6 months. This news was first reported by the Angels manager, Phil Nevin, before the team’s game against Kansas City on Sunday.

O’Hoppe was starting to get his bat swinging by putting up a .283 batting average with four home runs and 13 runs batted in in 16 games.

Angels: Logan O’Hoppe replacements after latest injury update

The Angels have a couple of choices that they can put behind the plate, Matt Thaiss and Chad Wallach.

Matt Thaiss has already been having a rough start to the season going 0-for-14, which he finally snapped this last Saturday against Kansas City. Chad Wallach has only had the chance to be behind the plate once this year on April 21st, where Wallach was able to get his first home run of the season.

General manager Perry Minasian has high hopes for these two replacements, via Sam Blum of The Athletic (subscription required).

"“We feel good about what we currently have with Chad and Matt. Obviously, Matt being fairly young, we’re seeing him develop on a day-to-day basis and Chad’s been there and done that.”"

Time will tell with the Angels on who they will for sure have starting behind the plate in the absence of O’Hoppe and how the rookie can recover from this injury to make sure that he will be good as new next season.
