Braves pitcher Spencer Strider made history on Monday night but his bid for a perfect game ended in the most brutal way because of Matt Olson’s error.

For the second time in less than a week, a pitcher’s perfect game was blown by an error.

On Friday, Drew Smyly and Cubs catcher Yan Gomes collided on an infield play that might have preserved his bid for perfection. On Monday night, it was Spencer Strider of the Braves who took a perfect game into the seventh inning before a fielding error ended it.

Matt Olson bungled a routine ground ball to first to put Jazz Chisholm on base. While the no-hitter was preserved, Strider’s perfect bid was over.

Here’s the unfortunate play:

Immediately, Olson took some stick from Twitter for the mishap.

The good news for Olson, if you can call it that, is that Strider wasn’t able to take his no-hit bid all the way either. In the eighth, Jean Segura hit a ball into the gap in left field. So, in the end, Olson’s error didn’t cost the pitcher anything.

Strider’s night was epic even if it didn’t end in fairytale fashion. He finished with 13 strikeouts, setting the Braves record for the most consecutive starts with at least nine strikeouts at nine. John Smoltz had set the record at eight in 1997.

While Strider shut down the Marlins’ lineup, the Braves unloaded on Miami with eight runs before Strider left the mound.
