Braves rumors: 3 ways Atlanta can finally get rid of Marcell Ozuna
By Mark Powell
Atlanta Braves should DFA Marcell Ozuna
Atlanta has a unique opportunity to dump Ozuna shortly after he qualifies for an MLB pension plan, which comes with 10 years of service time in the majors. Brian Snitker had been playing the slugger against left-handed pitching, but is no longer required to do so once Travis d’Arnaud comes off the injured list.
Snitker’s group is getting healthy at the right time. Atlanta called up outfielder Nick Solak, who will compete with Ozuna for playing time. Eli White and Sam Hilliard are very much in the same boat, and while Ozuna outplayed them in spring training, he hasn’t thus far in April.
Once Michael Harris II is healthy and recalled off the injured list, Ozuna’s days with the Braves will be numbered. Atlanta will likely choose to designate him for assignment, and assuming he isn’t claimed off waivers, will either grant him his release or send him to the minors if he has options left.
Thus will finally end the long and disappointing Ozuna saga. The 2020 season largely painted a different and misleading picture, which is a shame given why Atlanta acquired him in the first place. A power bat in the cleanup spot would be vastly appreciated in this Braves lineup. Instead, Atlanta found other ways to replace his production, and soon he’ll be out the door.
