Cowboys 7-round 2023 NFL mock draft with trade into Top 20
Even with Cooper Rush back, Dallas has had eyes on Max Duggan for a while
Had the Cowboys not wisely re-signed backup quarterback Cooper Rush in March, you could’ve made the case for the franchise looking at a quarterback much earlier in the draft than the sixth round. But even with Rush coming back into the fray with his experience and obvious body of work when he’s been forced into action, Dallas can’t ignore the position still.
Frankly, I’m not particularly high on Max Duggan. The TCU quarterback is tough as nails and is a fine athlete, but I don’t buy his ability to throw the ball anywhere near an NFL-caliber level, which was on display at the Senior Bowl and, frankly, on his film. With that said, Jerry Jones and the front office have been all over Duggan for quite a while, so if they do want to add another QB, he’s the most logical option in this spot.
Ventrell Miller is a perfect depth piece for the Cowboys LB corps
Leighton Vander Esch being back in the fold is a big win for the Cowboys, especially coming off of a strong 2022 campaign. Moreover, the team is still hopefule that Jabril Cox can be a big contributor at linebacker and they like what they saw from Damone Clark as a rookie last season. Linebacker, however, is another spot where the team could really use some more depth and someone who can contribute on special teams.
Ventrell Miller isn’t a great athlete, isn’t a size freak, and isn’t going to jump off the page at any point. What’s for sure, though, is that the Florida product is someone you want on your team. He has a great IQ for the game and the linebacker position and is almost always in the right spot if he can get there. As a depth piece and late-round flier, he’d make a ton of sense for Dallas.
