5. Kurt Warner, Rams (1999)

It remains one of the great stories in NFL annals and the main participant wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Kurt Warner began his NFL career in the training camp of the Green Bay Packers in 1994. The undrafted free agent wound up playing in NFL Europe and the Arena Football League. He played in one game for the then-St. Louis Rams in 1998 but things would change a year later.

During the 1999 preseason, head coach Dick Vermeil saw starter Trent Green go down for the season with a knee injury. In stepped Warner and as Vermeil predicted, he would “play good football.” The University of Northern Iowa product connected on an impressive 65.1 percent of his throws for 4,353 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just 13 interceptions.

The postseason was a bit of a rollercoaster for Warner. It began with a five-touchdown performance in a win over Minnesota. The Rams squeezed out an 11-6 victory over the Buccaneers in the NFC title game, but he was picked off three times. However, the 1999 NFL MVP threw for 414 yards and a pair of scores in a thrilling 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta, earning game MVP honors in the process.
