The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the biggest disappointments so far, but first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is trying to drag them to victory on Wednesday.

The St. Louis Cardinals had a disappointing end to their 2022 season after getting swept in the Wild Card Round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Now, they are in the midst of a dreadful start to the 2023 campaign, entering Wednesday night with a 9-15 record. To make Cardinals fans feel even worse, the team optioned top prospect Jordan Walker back down to Triple-A, even though he performed very well in the batter’s box.

Already losing two in a row to the San Francisco Giants, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt tried his best to carry the team to a victory on Wednesday night.

In the top of the first inning, Goldschmidt crushed a solo home run to left field to give St. Louis an early 1-0 lead on Anthony DeSclafani’s sixth pitch of the game. Two innings later, in Goldschmidt’s second at-bat, he went deep once again, this time sending the baseball 425 feet over the center field fence to extend St. Louis’ lead to 2-0.

Even with the 2-0 lead, the Cardinals couldn’t hold onto it.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, St. Louis starter Steven Matz surrendered a solo home run to right fielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and an RBI single to center fielder Austin Slater.

Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jordan Hicks entered in relief of Matz. With left fielder Mitch Haniger hitting a single, Cardinals center fielder Lars Nootbaar had a fielding error that allowed first baseman Wilmer Flores to reach first. In the very next at-bat, Hicks threw a wild pitch, which allowed Haniger to score from third to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.

As of the eighth inning, Goldschmidt has more hits than the entire Cardinals batting order with three. Goldschmidt went 4-for-4 with a single that inning. At that point, his teammates had three hits total.

The Cardinals are struggling, but Goldschmidt tried his damndest to help bring them to a victory.
