Strangest San Francisco 49ers of all time: O.J. Simpson
Obviously, everything about O.J. Simpson’s football career has taken a backseat due to his crimes and trials since he retired from the sport, but looking back at his career, one might completely forget he wasn’t just a Buffalo Bills player. After an injury-riddled 1977 season, Simpson went to the Bay Area.
After the season, he was traded to the 49ers, what he considered to be his hometown team. He was born in San Francisco back in 1947, He grew up in the famous Potrero Hill neighborhood. Simpson stayed in San Fran through high school and even played for the local junior college before he was recruited to USC.
It felt like a homecoming when Simpson was traded to the 49ers. It felt inevitable. His entire football playing career was in San Francisco, except for this one very long stop in Buffalo.
Things didn’t necessarily work out. He had 593 yards in his first year there and 460 in his second. He scored a total of six touchdowns in the two years, including two receiving touchdowns. His career ended with a whimper. He was one of the best running backs of all time, but not many will look back at his time with the 49ers fondly. It was just another end to a star running back who struggled to stay relevant after years of punishment.
