Last night was Game 1 of this four game series between the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers. For that one, the Yanks were the team with their ace on the mound and Gerit Cole got his fifth win of the season going 6.2 innings and allowing just two runs. Tonight, the script flips and the Rangers have Jacob deGrom on the hill. The Yankees are 15-11 after that win and the Rangers are 14-11.

deGrom is 2-0 in five starts with a 3.04 ERA while Clarke Schmidt, deGrom’s opposition, is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA.

Despite the Rangers loss last night, they’re big favorites with their ace on the mound.

Yankees vs. Rangers prediction and pick

The thing about deGrom this year in Texas is that he’s still the best pitcher in baseball, despite an ERA just north of three. He got roughed up in his first start as a Ranger, 3.2 innings, five runs, six hits, but since then he’s been elite. His FIP is all the way down 1.44 and last time out he went 6.0 strong with 11 strikeouts and just one earned run allowed.

The Yankees are 19th in team OPS this season and 22nd over the past week. They have the makings of a strong lineup, but it hasn’t really come together so far. They have plenty of hitters with solid production, but Aaron Judge only has an .863 OPS with six home runs. Again, solid numbers, but not the dominance we saw last year which really carried their offense.

New York will especially be in trouble today, not just because of their lineup’s mediocrity, but because of the struggles of their starting pitcher. Schmidt has a 6.30 ERA and a 5.90 FIP which means he’s not going to expect some big positive regression coming. Don’t overthink this one today, the Rangers have a huge advantage on the mound and the Rangers have won every time he’s taken the mound.
