The Packers bucked convention to go defensive with their first pick in the draft, taking Iowa’s Lukas Van Ness.
As they say, you can never have too many pass rushers on defense. Even so, it was a curious selection as there doesn’t seem to be room for Van Ness to start immediately, the way any number of offensive first-round selections would have.
The defensive front definitely got a boost in terms of depth with Van Ness being joined by fourth-round defensive end Colby Wooden and sixth-round Karl Brook. Of course, their immediate place in the two-deep reflects the scarcity of bodies in the defensive trenches after losing Dean Lwory and Jarran Reed in free agency.
The rest of Green Bay’s defense-oriented selections were in the secondary and will have to battle to earn a roster spot before they can talk two-deep. That includes cornerback Carrington Valentine and safety Anthony Johnson Jr.
