Fans are ready to cancel the Yankees’ season after a month

The start to the New York Yankees season has been far less than ideal.
Fans are unhappy with the rough start to the New York Yankees’ 2023 season.
The Yankees closed out a bleak April by losing 7 of their last 10 games. As Alex Fast reported in a tweet on Sunday night, it is the first time since 2016 that the Yankees finish April at the bottom of their division.
Sunday afternoon’s 15-2 loss to the Texas Rangers was downright unwatchable even early on in the game. The Yankees have recently shown an inability to get clutch hits and score runs, so the moment Nestor Cortes gave up a grand slam in the first inning, fans could feel that the Yankees weren’t coming back.
The brutal outing was rare for Cortes, but considering he and Gerrit Cole are the only starting pitchers from the Yankees’ expected rotation who are currently healthy, the team needs the lefty to be steady like he was in 2022. Cortes’ ERA through the first month of the season is 4.91.
Yankees struggles have been largely injury-based
The Yankees are desperately waiting for pitchers Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino to get healthy. They’re also struggling without key position players Giancarlo Stanton and Harrison Bader. Aaron Judge has missed the past few games with a hip injury, hoping to avoid an IL stint.
Jake Bauers was brought up from AAA and played one inning, making an incredible catch in left field on April 29th. He suffered a knee injury during the play. The Yankees finally caught a break, as Bauers’ MRI was clean, meaning he’ll avoid the IL.
Many fans fear that even with the return of some players, the Yankees are not built to win a championship with the current roster construction. Barely escaping the month of April with a record over .500 proves that the team is not built with the quality depth pieces needed to absorb injuries.
Fans are understandably frustrated with players like Aaron Hicks and Isiah Kiner-Falefa receiving playing time. But manager Aaron Boone can only work with what he has unless general manager Brian Cashman makes some moves.
It’s clear that something needs to change, otherwise, the Yankees and their fans are in for a bumpy ride in 2023.
