Taking a look at the 2023 Kentucky Derby post positions and each horse’s odds for the 149th Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs.

We saw absolute mayhem at the Kentucky Derby a year ago when the biggest longshot in the history of the Run for the Roses, Rich Strike, took down the field and captured the victory at Churchill Downs. Now, every trainer, jockey and horse is hoping that, even if they aren’t as big of a longshot, they can feel that same thrill of victory.

Forte is listed as the favorite for the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Forte is one of three horses under his watch that will be running the most famous horse race in the world this weekend, joined by Tapit Trice — the second-shortest odds in the field — and Kingsbarn.

The Kentucky Derby post positions were revealed and drawn on May 1. Here’s a look at how that draw turned out and at the odds for each horse in the race.

If history tells us anything about the Kentucky Derby post positions, it’s that Derma Sotogake should already be counted out. There has never been a winner from the No. 17 post. Meanwhile, in the 148 previous runnings at Churchill Downs, post No. 6 and No. 11 have been the next two worst spots to start from with only 2.2% and 2.6% of the winners coming from those posts, respectively.

The 2023 Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 6 at famous Churchill Downs. The 149th Run for the Roses will take place with a post time set for 6:57 p.m. ET.
