Cody Rhodes has ‘old school’ tactics for facing Brock Lesnar at WWE Backlash
By Scott Rogust
Cody Rhodes spoke with FanSided on behalf of WWE SuperCard and WWE 2K23. WWE SuperCard is celebrating its 9th anniversary this year as a staple of the card battle genre with 29+ million downloads across all of its platforms, where a brand new update was released the week of April 24, featuring a hint of things to come in Season 10.
WrestleMania season is officially over, and WWE fans now await to see what is next in the coming months until we reach the “Grandest Stage of Them All” next April. The very next premium live event will be Backlash, taking place on Saturday, May 6, live from San Juan, Puerto Rico. And there is one big match that is scheduled for the card.
Cody Rhodes, the winner of the 2023 men’s Royal Rumble, is set to take on Brock Lesnar at Backlash. This match came to be as Lesnar had volunteered to be Rhodes’ tag team partner against Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa on the Raw after WrestleMania. But before the match could begin, Lesnar attacked Rhodes to end the show, which finished with Lesnar giving him an F5 on steel steps.
I spoke with Cody Rhodes this week and asked him about facing Lesnar and what kind of strategy he would use against “The Beast Incarnate.” Rhodes said that he will be using some “old school” tactics to defeat Lesnar.

"“Years and years and years ago, I think I was watching Shawn Michaels wrestle against Vader. And I remember Jim Ross said on commentary, ‘the guy with the lowest amount of body weight, the longer this match goes, the more it’s in their favor carrying around less,’ and that was always my strategy to wrestling big men and and Brock being one that were of a similar height, but he’s as wide as this banner behind me,” said Rhodes. “And it’s all muscle and all legit just brute strength in the Force that we’ve seen not just in a squared circle, but in the octagon. I can’t just take that Jim Ross piece of advice and that can’t be my only thing. It can’t just be cardio. I think there’s got to be an ace up your sleeve in terms of of a strategy.“You know, Daniel Bryan, he wanted to take the legs out from Brock Lesnar. I think I watched Finn Balor one time try to try to take on his ribs. So you have to get really old school and cerebral and you have to approach it very much from the sports base of what can you do to get this guy behind the eight ball? Or is it a matter of Brock starts so hot so often? Can you withstand the first bit of the onslaught and and then gas them out? You know, I’m not gonna say which which, which I’m applying towards this, but I’m very prepared for Brock Lesnar, whereas I think on the other side, Brock is not prepared for me. I think Brock looks at me as someone who’s a threat to the top top role. He has been the man here, Roman and him have shared that spot and no doubt they’ve made it very clear who they are. I showed up and turned a lot of heads. And I think he just didn’t like it and didn’t like what it felt like watching someone else as we talked about on this call main event. WrestleMania. So he gets to find out more about me, I feel like I know everything there is to know about Brock Lesnar and, and hopefully we can leave like I said, 56-1.”"
Lesnar has had matches in which he performs multiple suplexes and F5’s, sometimes making quick work of his opponent. But as Rhodes brings up, there were moments where Lesnar’s opponents target a specific part of the body.
At Survivor Series 2018, Bryan took out Lesnar’s knee to get an advantage in that match. Then at Royal Rumble 2019, Balor targeted the midsection. Rhodes did not divulge into what his exact game plan will be, but fans will find out on Saturday during Backlash.
Rhodes said that since his return to WWE, he has won 55 matches, but lost just once. That one loss happened at WrestleMania 39, in which Rhodes looked like he was close to winning the Undisputed WWE Universal championship from Reigns. But interference from the Bloodline and a Samoan Spike by Solo Sikoa cost Rhodes the match and kept Reigns 900+ day run intact. Rhodes said that if there was anyone who could hand him his second loss, Lesnar would be a “good candidate.”
"Brock Lesnar is the most decorated combat sports athlete of all time. I’m 55 and one in my return it up to WWE 55 matches and one loss. If there was going to be another loss, Brock Lesnar would be a good candidate in terms of how good he is, how skilled he is, and how almost underrated as highly rated as Brock has been as a wrestler, WWE superstar, still incredibly underrated,” said Rhodes."
He is looking to win his 56th match in this latest tenure in WWE at the expense of Lesnar. Backlash takes place on Saturday, May 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET, and will be streaming exclusively on Peacock.
