Breaking down Wells Fargo Championship DraftKings picks for the week at Quail Hollow with top plays, top fades and building a PGA DFS golf lineup.

Get designated, get elevated, get ready for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship. After a brief stop last year in the land of Old Bay, the PGA Tour is heading back to the famed Quail Hollow Club for the 2023 tournament. And with this being the next designated event this season, the field is loaded — even if No. 1 and 2 in the world, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, are taking the week off.

Still, Rory McIlroy is the favorite this week at the Wells Fargo Championship, which stands to reason given his elite course history here. But the other big names in the golfing world are almost all here, shaping up for a great tournament. However, our Wells Fargo Championship DraftKings picks are a tough task with all of the talent and form in this field.

How do we navigate that? Let’s figure that out as we break down our full 2023 Wells Fargo Championship DraftKings picks with plays and fades in each pricing range before building our winning PGA DFS lineup for the week.

Wells Fargo Championship DraftKings picks for PGA DFS lineups: Top Plays

$10,000: Rory McIlroy ($11,100) – It feels like Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau might be the most popular plays in the $10K range, largely because Rory’s tepid showings at THE PLAYERS and Masters before an unscheduled break might scare people off. Well, McIlroy is a stud at Quail Hollow and, with him talking about getting his head right with the time off, I think he comes out and dominates a course he hasn’t finished worse than T16 at in his last three starts, including a win in 2021. Also Consider: Xander Schauffele ($10,700), Patrick Cantlay ($10,500)

$9,000: Viktor Hovland ($9,200) – Hovland is my pick to win this week, so his presence in this spot shouldn’t be all that surprising to anyone keeping up with that. At a course that highlights driving, ball striking and specifically long iron play, the Norwegian is a phenomenal fit. There’s always a worry with the short game but he’s flirted in big events outside of the Heritage and was T3 at Quail Hollow in 2021. I’m buying in. Also Consider: Jordan Spieth ($9,600), Matt Fitzpatrick ($9,300), Sungjae Im ($9,100), Jason Day ($9,000)

$8,000: Justin Thomas ($8,900) – Particularly at this price, go ahead and prepare for Justin Thomas to be heavily owned. With that said, I don’t see how you can get around playing him given the upside. He’s gained 1.83 weighted strokes tee-to-green over the last 20 rounds and has been simply not putting at an elite level. However, that started to trend in a better direction at the RBC Heritage. He’s primed for a big bounce-back and missing out could be costly in your PGA DFS lineup. Also Consider: Rickie Fowler ($8,800), Cameron Young ($8,700), Tyrrell Hatton ($8,500), Sahith Theegala ($8,200), Brian Harman ($8,000)

$7,000: Hayden Buckley ($7,400) – I have Buckley circled this week as a potential dark horse. In his last two individual starts, he’s come inside the Top 10, including a T5 at the RBC Heritage. He’s done that with elite ball striking, gaining 1.89 strokes in that department over his last 12 rounds. If he can keep the putter from being a disaster, he’s hitting the ball too well to ignore at this price. Also Consider: Keith Mitchell ($7,800), Wyndham Clark ($7,800), Gary Woodland ($7,600), Patrick Rodgers ($7,500), Denny McCarthy ($7,400), Joel Dahmen ($7,300), Akshay Bhatia ($7,000)

$6,000: Joseph Bramlett ($6,900) – Going back to this well, Bramlett has quietly been playing extremely well by his standards, notching a T10 last week in Mexico. He’s gaining over 1.5 strokes tee to green over his last 20 rounds and has been fine enough with the putter. With how long he drives the ball, he’s a live sleeper in the $6K range. Also Consider: Luke List ($6,900), Eric Cole ($6,800), Pierceson Coody ($6,500)

Wells Fargo Championship DraftKings picks for PGA DFS lineups: Top Fades

$10,000: Tony Finau ($10,200) – Especially coming off of his win in Mexico, people might be inclined to ride the Tony Finau train this week. Not me. Quail Hollow, for whatever reason, has historically flummoxed Finau with a missed cut, T60 and T21 finish in his last three starts here. He should be a fit, but at a place where course history has been so sticky, I’m staying away from him this week in the $10K range.

$9,000: Collin Morikawa ($9,800) – Make no mistake, we know that Collin Morikawa is an elite player. But the fact of the matter is that he’s at the top of a loaded price tier and hasn’t been playing at the peak of his ability over the past few months, at least in terms of his finishes. Given the richness of the price range, I’m not going to invest anything on DraftKings in Morikawa.

$8,000: Tom Kim ($8,400) – It feels like I’m almost picking on Tom Kim at this point but the performance just hasn’t been there. In his last six starts, he has just one finish inside the Top 30, which was in the smallest field in that group, The Masters. His ball striking has dipped and, when you combine that with his lack of distance off the tee, I don’t think Quail Hollow is the spot where he gets back in the groove.

$7,000: Taylor Montgomery ($7,600) – Because of how well he’s been finishing relatively consistently this year, Montgomery might get some looks. Well, look away. This is a ball striker’s golf course and Montgomery is losing just under 2.0 strokes with the ball striking in his last 20 rounds. Even with how good he is with the short game, I can’t trust that type of performance on this course.

Wells Fargo Championship: Best DraftKings golf PGA DFS lineup

  • Viktor Hovland ($9,200)
  • Sungjae Im ($9,100)
  • Justin Thomas ($8,900)
  • Brian Harman ($8,000)
  • Hayden Buckley ($7,400)
  • Joel Dahmen ($7,300)

Skipping the $10K range might not be fun but there is so much value in the $9K and $8K range that I had to do it. We’ve already talked about Hovland, JT and Buckley, so you know what we’re getting there.

For the rest of this group, Sungjae is quietly humming with five straight finishes of T17 or better, including three Top 10s. He’s striking the hell out of the ball, gaining over 2.2 strokes tee to green in the last 20 rounds and should fit perfectly. Harman is a shorter hitter, which I don’t love, but he was T7 at the Heritage his last time out and is playing solidly while having a great history at Quail Hollow that includes a win in 2017 and two more Top 25s in his last four starts here.

Speaking of course history, that’s why Dahmen rounds out the lineup. His last three starts at this course are all T18 or better. Moreover, he’s striking the ball wonderfully right now, gaining 1.64 strokes over his last 20 rounds off the tee and on approach combined. That’s great value, especially if he can banish an ice-cold putter this week.
