3 New York Yankees who won’t be on the roster by June 1
By Lbaquero
The Yankees’ struggles this year have been very persistent. These three players’ tenure in New York may not last much longer.
To say the New York Yankees have had a miserable start to the 2023 campaign would be an understatement. The Bronx Bombers start the month of May sitting alone in last place in the American League East holding a record below .500.
However, with the amount of injuries they have, this is not exactly the roster you should expect to see come June.
As some of their 16 key injured players return, many of the current faces we see right now will not be here for quite much longer, based on their performance.
3. Willie Calhoun won’t be on the Yankees roster by June 1
After a spring training where he hit .294 and slugged for .392, Willie Calhoun was initially assigned to Triple-A and was told along with a group of other Yankees to be ready to contribute.
Thus far in his three weeks of being a Yankee, he has negatively contributed, throwing up a mere .222 batting average with an OPS+ of 57, 43 points below the league average. He has only two extra-base hits, which is not enough for a player mainly being utilized as a designated hitter, playing only four of his 21 games in the field.
Previously in his career on defense, he has not recorded one season with more the 1.0 Out Above Average. As for his overall value this year, he has a -0.4 fWAR as the fourth worst Yankee to play this year by WAR.
Calhoun is in the bigs simply for depth to fill the gaps of Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and previously Harrison Bader, who just got activated off the 10-Day IL. Judge should be reinstated next week, while Stanton does not have a timetable for a return.
With, Jake Bauers and Oswaldo Cabrera on the bench, and Franchy Cordero waiting in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre after having a fiery first week and a half to the season, Calhoun looks to be an odd man out sooner rather than later.
