After losing in 10 innings on Sunday in Tampa Bay, the New York Yankees are hovering around the .500 mark and are in last place in the American League East. Is it time for the Yankees to part ways with manager Aaron Boone?

Absolutely, firing a manager early in the season is a drastic measure, but we know that move has worked for other teams in the past, most notably last season when the Philadelphia Phillies pushed Joe Girardi out of the manager’s spot in early June. Bench coach Rob Thomson took over and eventually guided Philadelphia to a World Series appearance.

Could the same kind of move benefit the Yankees? It’s clear that the fanbase is growing weary of falling short of the Fall Classic, so would a new manager be the spark needed in the Bronx? It’s a possibility, but with injuries and underperforming players, would a new skipper really make the difference?

Should the Yankees decide to move on from Aaron Boone, here are three potential candidates to replace him.

Potential Aaron Boone replacement for the New York Yankees: Don Mattingly

Despite spending 14 years (the entirety of his MLB career) wearing the pinstripes, Mattingly has never managed the team, guiding the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-15) and Miami Marlins (2016-2022) instead. Mattingly’s overall record with the Dodgers was 446-363, so it’s clear he can win with a team that has talent on the roster and deep pockets in the front office.

Mattingly did serve as a coach for the Yankees from 2004 until 2007 before leaving along with Joe Torre to head to Los Angeles. It’s safe to say there is plenty of Yankees credentials on his resume, so the hire would make sense.

The 62-year-old Mattingly currently serves as the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays and just said in a return trip to Yankee Stadium with Toronto that he has “still got a lot of baseball” in him. Could that include taking over the Yankees if Boone is fired?
