NBA Mock Draft: Who each lottery team should take with the No. 2 pick
By Ian Levy
If you were designing an ideal pick for the Magic from scratch, you’d be looking at a guard, a primary creator but also an excellent shooter. Someone who can defend aggressively at the point of attack. And someone who could reliably stretch the defense with the threat of an outside shot and orchestrate the offense along with Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. The Magic have three guards on the roster — Jalen Suggs, Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony — and if you could roll them into one player, that would be the answer. The problem is that, right now, the Magic are too often forced into either-or decisions with their rotation.
Thompson may not be the ideal combination of those three players and the diverse skills they represent. Shooting is the most crucial swing skill for the current roster and shooting also happens to be his biggest question mark. But Scoot Henderson has plenty of questions about his outside shooting as well and Thompson’s defensive upside, size and ability to play off the ball if necessary might make him more attractive to Orlando.
