MLB Rumors: Even the Mets are throwing up their hands over pitching woes

With a loss to the Reds on Thursday, the New York Mets are now 18-20 on the season, falling further behind the Braves in the NL East, and left looking for answers. When it comes to their starting pitching, though, they might be as perplexed as to how to fix the issue as every fan is as well.

During the SNY broadcast of Wednesday’s eventual loss to Cincinnati, the probable starters for the four-game set upcoming against the Nationals came on the screen. The Mets know they will face Mackenzie Gore, Trevor Williams, Jake Irvin and Patrick Corbin. As for New York, TBD is getting four straight days on the bump as they didn’t list a single probable starter for any of the games.

The only major, major injury that the Mets are dealing with in the rotation now that Justin Verlander has returned from the IL is to Max Scherzer. Admittedly, that’s a big one, especially with him also struggling before the recent discovery of the ailment in his neck/shoulder/back. However, the staff as a whole as struggled.

New York ranks 23rd in MLB in ERA for starting pitchers this season with the group posting a 5.38 to this point. For a team that was supposed to be a World Series contender with the money Steve Cohen has spent, the pitching staff hasn’t followed through.

In actuality, what we’ll probably see in the Nats series is some order of Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Justin Verlander and either David Peterson or a bullpen game. But the graphic that was shown with TBDs across the board says everything you need to know about the feeling regarding the Mets rotation right now.
