Phillies notebook: How long could J.T. Realmuto be out of action?

As I noted in an earlier article, Philadelphia’s All-Star catcher left Friday’s game early after sliding into third base and spraining his right pinkie finger.

You will notice in the video below that Realmuto’s hand actually goes under the third base bag in a very awkward moment. While Realmuto escaped with just a sprain, it easily could have been a more dire situation for the Phillies.

“I jammed it into the bag and then the bag popped up and landed on my finger and bent it backwards, so I don’t know if the sprain came from when I jammed it or when it landed on my finger. It happened so fast,” Realmuto said.

Both Realmuto and Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson indicated that the catcher would miss Saturday night’s game in Denver and would likely return to the lineup for the series finale on Sunday. Neither seemed concerned after the game about the extent of the injury.

“He’s a little bit sore, but he’s a lot less sore than he was when he came out of the game, so that’s a good sign,” Thomson said. “I would think that I’ll give him the day tomorrow and then he’ll be ready to go the next day.”
