Former Eagles, Colts and Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz thinks he can still be an NFL starter, and is preparing as such.

I give Carson Wentz credit — he’s forgotten about more interceptions than most professional quarterbacks will ever throw. That makes Wentz’s approach this offseason all the more impressive.

Wentz remains unsigned, but hopes his chance is coming soon. Per Jeremy Fowler, Wentz is willing to be a backup or starting QB. It’s nice that Wentz has a decent understanding of where he is at this point in his career. He’s a backup. The (or a starting QB) line isn’t really necessary, despite Fowler’s tweet.

I, too, am open to a starting quarterback role in the right circumstances. Good for you, Carson.

NFL Rumors: What team should sign Carson Wentz?

If Carson Wentz is smart, he’ll go somewhere he can mentor a young passer, act like a model teammate, and enter the QB lottery again next season. Look no further than Mitchell Trubisky, a first-round bust who used his one year backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo as a path towards receiving a starting nod in Pittsburgh. Most importantly, that Steelers contract was a multiyear deal.

Wentz has connections around the league. In Jacksonville, for example, he could reunite with Josh Pederson and back up Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence is an established starter and Pro Bowl-level talent, but should he go down to injury, there are worse backups to have than Wentz.

if Wentz wants to start this coming year, however, he’d be best-served waiting until training camp. Should a starting quarterback get hurt, then signing Wentz makes much more sense for contending teams.

Wentz had a 32.9 QBR last season, which ranked 30th out of 31 qualified starting quarterbacks. In the right system, perhaps a coaching staff can help revive his talent.
