In honor of Mothers Day, MLB players are wearing pink on Sunday. While the uniforms are (for the most part) their usual colors, players are permitted to wear pink cleats, wristbands and more.

Every great baseball player had a mom, most of whom supported them along the way. Before World Series glory, there were little league practices and travel games across the state. It’s a lot of work being a professional baseball player, but it’s even more being that player’s mother.

Baseball players also wear pink in October due to breast cancer awareness month. However, the Mother’s Day edition is to honor moms everywhere. On Father’s Day, MLB players often wear a light blue cap, or a themed uniform depending on the year.

Why is MLB wearing pink today?

Starting in 2021, players started wearing Mother’s Day caps, which were pink. As MLB stated that day, “As always, Major League Baseball will be celebrating our annual salute to those special moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, aunts, and others in our lives by having their players wear uniforms with pink elements. Every team, every player will wear pink.”

And the league hasn’t altered its policy since, as the pink doubles as a breast cancer awareness motive.

MLB pink bats, explained

On Mothers Day, Louisville Slugger makes special pink bats, which are then auctioned off and donated to a breast cancer awareness fund. Players around the league will often use they pink bats, which surely takes some getting used to from the viewer’s perspective.

As the Baseball Hall of Fame states:

"“On Mother’s Day, major league players can honor their own mothers, while also helping to focus attention on breast cancer. With pink bats in their strong hands, they are raising money to support research and services. The idea for these special bats came after a Hillerich & Bradsby subsidiary made pink hockey sticks for a National Hockey League breast cancer awareness campaign in the spring of 2006. Hillerich suggested that baseball try the same idea with pink bats and MLB quickly added them to their 2006 Mother’s Day program.”"

While it seems like an odd look for some, MLB players wearing pink is for a damn good reason.
