Worst Cowboys moves of the offseason: 1. Swapping Dalton Schultz for Luke Schoonmaker

Most Cowboys fans expected to lose Schultz in free agency this offseason, but not many would have guessed he’d only leave for a one-year, $9 million contract. At that price, the Cowboys could have afforded to keep the veteran tight end in the fold.

After all, Schultz was a valuable security blanket in the passing game for Prescott. He isn’t a dynamic receiver, but he kept the chains moving during his tenure in Dallas.

Instead of retaining Schultz, the Cowboys elected to draft Luke Schoonmaker in Round 2. He’s a decent prospect, but developing into Schultz in a few years likely represents his ceiling. If the Cowboys were going to swap a rookie for Schultz they should have been shopping for a higher-ceiling option on Day One of the draft.

There’s a chance Jake Ferguson even keeps Schoonmaker off the field for a large chunk of the regular season. No matter how it’s viewed, the Cowboys have suffered a significant downgrade at the tight end spot heading into the regular season. That might counteract all the good work the front office did at wide receiver this off-season.
