Ranking the 3 best coaching options for the Bucks: 2. Frank Vogel

Frank Vogel has been one of the better coaches in the NBA for the last decade. During his time with the Indiana Pacers he led them to five playoff appearances and two consecutive Conference Finals appearances in 2013 and 2014. During his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, he won the NBA championship in 2020.

Vogel’s main focus as a coach is defense. Both the Pacers and Lakers were among the best defenses in the league with him in charge. Vogel’s defensive mindset would work extremely well in Milwaukee when you have two Defensive Player of the Year candidates in Giannis and Brook Lopez, assuming they can re-sign him, and have one of the best defensive guards in the league in Jrue Holiday.

The thing that should intrigue the Bucks the most is Vogel’s willingness to make adjustments, best proven in the 2020 playoffs. When the Lakers played the small ball Rockets, Vogel practically benched the Lakers two big men — Javale McGee and Dwight Howard. In the following series against the Nuggets, Vogel noticed Dwight Howard’s physicality was affecting Jokic so he started Howard in Games 4 and 5.

The coaches that are able and willing to make adjustments in the playoffs are the teams that will go far. With the Bucks’s versatility, they should be very intrigued by what schemes Vogel could be able to whip if they hired him as a head coach.
