Georgia lands No. 1 punter for 2024 out of a state making it famous

Drew Miller committed to the G, but Iowa losing a punter to Georgia should not have happened.

Georgia is elite at football and Iowa is elite at punting, so something had to give in Drew Miller‘s recruitment.

The No. 1 punter in the 2024 cycle committed to the G on Friday evening. Despite being a Mediapolis, Iowa native, the Hawkeyes didn’t even offer him… I mean, he’s wearing a freaking Hawkeyes t-shirt in his 247Sports profile… While Iowa is taking punting to new heights, Georgia is recruiting nationally to get the best players in the country, so I get why he picked the Dawgs here.

Miller had seven offers including Air Force, Army, Iowa State, Michigan, North Carolina State and Texas, in addition to Georgia. I don’t understand how Iowa can let a guy from Des Moines County leave, but it is happening. Tory Taylor may be the best thing to happen to punting since Ray Guy, but not everybody can get six years of collegiate eligibility like The GOAT Stetson Bennett IV did.

While Miller may have been used more playing at Iowa, he will probably win way more at Georgia.

Georgia gets No. 1 punter in 2024 class out of Iowa, where punting is all the rage

There is a lot to unpack here. This isn’t the first time a blue-chipper at a particular position group left Iowa for an SEC program. Linemen Ross Pierschbacher and Kadyn Proctor were born to road grade for Kirk Ferentz … until the decided they wanted to go play for Nick Saban at Alabama, alright. Iowa does not have the in-state talent of a Georgia, but you have to protect your borders.

I think what this signifies is two-fold. One, SEC powerhouses are going to be able to pick and choose top-flight talent to come to their program, no matter what part of the country they hail from. And two, we have to wonder if how far past the beginning of the end it is for The Ferentzes in Iowa City. There won’t be a Big Ten West shortly and no empty-calorie, 10-2 banners to hang.

You have to wonder how much longer Iowa fans are going to tolerate nepotism over offensive competency. The big number to keep an eye on is 25, as in 25 points per game, as in the number of points per game Iowa has to score for offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz to get a raise. Even if the defense and special teams contributes to that lofty offensive goal, you’re doing great, Sweetie!

Overall, Miller has every reason to go to a place like Athens for college. One, it is awesome and two, he will win a ton there. Factor in former Dawgs such as Drew Butler and Jake Camarda having great college careers in Athens and been starters in the NFL, Georgia is not a bad place to be if you dig winning and major hangtime, bro. Of course, you can win the Ray Guy a tad easier over at Iowa.

Let’s just hope the Hawkeyes shirt in Miller’s 247Sports profile doesn’t come back to haunt them.
