Preakness Stakes purse, payout by finishing positions: Prize money for winners
Breaking down the 2023 Preakness Stakes purse with the payout by finishing position, the winner’s prize money, and how it compares to the Triple Crown.
The 2023 Preakness Stakes at historic Pimlico Race Course was set for Saturday, May 20 and the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown was set to be pretty drama-filled. Everyone was watching as they looked for Mage, the winner of the Kentucky Derby just two weeks ago, trying to complete the second leg and get one win closer to immortality.
Of course, one thing to always note about the Preakness is that it’s a different race than the one in Louisville. Pimlico Race Course hosts just a mere eight horses in a normal field, but even that was tightened up to just seven horses in the field this year with one of the competitors dropping out of the field.
In addition to Triple Crown glory, though, the trainers, owners and jockeys are all also hoping to get their share of prize money from the 2023 Preakness Stakes purse. But how does the payout break down this year for the race? Let’s take a look.
Preakness Stakes purse 2023: Prize money for winner
Of the $1.5 million Preakness Stakes purse in 2023, the winner of the second leg in the Triple Crown will be awarded an impressive $900,000, just short of a $1 million prize money reward for the victory. That is less than the Kentucky Derby but, given that is a 20-horse field and the Preakness is merely eight horses — seven this year after one dropped out on Saturday morning.
Preakness Stakes purse, payout by finish position for 2023
The top five finishers are all paid out at the Preakness Stakes and here’s how much of the purse they each of those horses owners, trainers, and jockeys will split up for their finish.
- $900,000
- $300,000
- $165,000
- $90,000
- $45,000
The prize money is definitely noticeably less than that of the Kentucky Derby. In fact, the Preakness purse is quite literally half the size of the one at Churchill Downs. It’s also now the same payout that is available in a couple of weeks at the Belmont Stakes after that race raised its purse $500,000 from last year.
