Cowboysā Cut Candidate No. 2: Sean McKeon
What to do, what to do in Dalton Schultzās absence?
Well, the Cowboys currently have six tight ends rostered on the depth chart, so one will probably have to go this summer. Our moneyās on Sean McKeon.
The Michigan product enters his fourth season on the Cowboys, and so far, his impact has been minimal. In 36 total games played, McKeon has eked by with just six catches for 38 yards and one touchdown.
Time is running out for him to develop into a rotational piece ā at best ā and the Cowboys may already be thinking of cutting ties with him.
After taking second-rounder Luke Schoonmaker in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Cowboys have players with more upside ready to fill Schultzās hole: Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and Schoonmaker.
Compared to Ferguson and Hendershot, who both played more than 25 percent of offensive snaps last year, McKeon played just 14 percent. Generating consistent rhythm in the passing game will be the Cowboysā tight ends primary focus in 2023, and given McKeonās lack of experience and the coachesā unwillingness to give him more exposure, he may be more expendable than others.
There have been scenarios last season when McKeon was used effectively as a fullback, but Dallas just added Hunter Luepke at that position. Maybe McKeon can outbattle Luepke in training camp and make his bread and butter as a versatile fullback, maybe not.
