Let’s figure out precisely how many teams will make the College Football Playoff in 2023.

Changes are coming to the College Football Playoff here soon, but we still have to play out the upcoming 2023 season first.

While the current postseason format has achieved what it initially set out to do, people have not been thrilled with the results. For every good playoff game, we get about two or three clunkers. With half the country not interested in the games come bowl season, something had to give. The field will be expanding to 12 teams in 2024, featuring six conference champions and six at-larges.

After one last run, the College Football Playoff format will be changing ahead of the 2024 season.

So how many teams will make the playoff in 2023 now anyhow?

College Football Playoff: How many teams make the postseason field in 2023?

As it has been the first nine playoffs dating back to the inaugural one in 2014, the four best teams in the country make the field. That’s it. Just those four teams. The cool part about it when the idea of postseason expansion was conceived was that conference championships didn’t matter in the equation, only the four best teams. Typically, only two or three of the four can win the whole thing.

While this four-team format was set to exist through the 2025 college season so that we would get four full rotations of the New Year’s Six bowls as national semifinal games, big changes had to come anyway. All six will be incorporated as quarterfinals and semifinals starting in 2024. For this upcoming season, the Rose and Sugar Bowls will be serving as the two national semifinal games.

Until we get to expansion ahead of the 2024 season, we are just going to have to deal with the fact that we are going to get a clunker or two in the final three playoff games of the current format. We were fortunate to have two outstanding national semifinals last season with TCU beating Michigan and Georgia edging out Ohio State. Too bad the Dawgs destroyed those Frogs…

Enjoy college football anyway you can because it is 100 percent the best thing in sports out there.
