Bills’ notable OTA absence is a low-key advantage for Super Bowl hopes
By John Buhler
The Buffalo Bills should be just fine without Stefon Diggs taking part in OTAs this spring.
It should be viewed as no Stefon Diggs, no problem for the Buffalo Bills during OTAs.
Diggs loves to make big-time plays as a pass-catcher, but he also loves his money. After essentially forcing his way out of Minnesota, he once again is playing hardball with the Buffalo brass. While Josh Allen and company would love nothing more than to have their No. 1 receiver available to put in the work at OTAs, here is why this is a low-key Super Bowl advantage for them.
What if I told you it has everything to do with who Allen throws and hands the ball off to in OTAs?
Buffalo Bills can gain slight Super Bowl advantage without Stefon Diggs at OTAs
Look. It’s not going to be by a lot, and I don’t really think the Bills will win the Super Bowl, not because they never have before, but because they can’t run the ball! Until they attack the ground game with ferocious aggression, there will always be a finite ceiling in their upward trajectory as a franchise. Then again, not having Diggs for OTAs could force Allen to spread the football around.
We already know that Gabe Davis is a beast as a No. 2 wide receiver and that Dawson Knox is the go-up-and-get-it type of tight end. However, the rest of their receiver corps is a bunch of “who is that?”. Even more importantly, this affords opportunities for Allen to get on the same page with Utah rookie tight end Dalton Kincaid. Knox and Kincaid running two tight-end sets would be sweet.
Furthermore, OTAs would be a fantastic time to get everyone on the same page about how the 2023 Bills are going to relentlessly run the ball down everyone’s throat to open up the pass even more. Latavius Murray and Damien Harris are ageless, while James Cook should technically be in his prime. Buffalo also has an amazing gadget player in veteran Nyheim Hines who can do it all.
While having Diggs at OTAs has Buffalo as close to full strength as possible, Allen’s growing relationship with the other cast of characters in this offense will help get Buffalo over the top. Joe Burrow’s rapport with his Cincinnati receiving corps is elite. Although Patrick Mahomes has new wide receivers to work with seemingly every year, he is Patrick Mahomes, who can do no wrong.
OTAs won’t last forever, but the work Allen puts in with the rest of the receivers will pay dividends.
