USMNT news: Agony for Reyna, Horvath’s heroics, Johnny to Real Betis
Today’s USMNT news includes Gio Reyna’s Borussia Dortmund coming so close to winning the Bundesliga. It was not all bad for Americans as Ethan Horvath helped Luton Town to promotion to the Premier League. Also, Johnny Cardoso has been linked with Real Betis.
USMNT news: Agony for Gio Reyna
Gio Reyna’s Borussia Dortmund just needed to win against Mainz and the Bundesliga was theirs. However, they found themselves two goals down at half-time. Reyna was introduced in the 62nd minute to try and turn the game around.
The American assisted Raphael Guerreiro and Niklas Sule to get the game back to 2-2. There was late hope when news came through that FC Koln had equalized against Bayern Munich. If Bayern could only draw then Dortmund would claim the title, but it was not to be as Jamal Musiala got a late winner for Thomas Tuchel’s side. The Bundesliga was Bayern’s for the 11th consecutive season.
It was heartbreak for Reyna and his teammates who had the title in their hands. The USMNT midfielder can be proud of his performance, this season he has been used as a super-sub and when he came on he definitely made an impact.
It has been a rollercoaster of a season for Reyna. He was clearly emotional at the final whistle but should be proud of his efforts.
USMNT news: Ethan Horvath’s heroics
Ethan Horvath helped Luton Town to promotion to the Premier League, as they defeated Coventry City at Wembley in the Championship playoff final.
The match was level at 1-1 after extra time and the match would go to penalties. After 11 consecutive successful spot kicks, Fankaty Dabo fired wide of Horvath’s goal to send the Hatters to English soccer’s top flight.
It now means that Horvath has helped two teams in consecutive years to promotion through the playoffs. The American came on late on as Nottingham Forest beat Huddersfield in last year’s final.
Unfortunately, Horvath was not given an opportunity to play in the Premier League by Forest as he was sent on loan to Luton. His deal with Luton expires this summer, so it remains to be seen if the club will try and make it permanent.
USMNT news: Johnny Cardoso to Real Betis
American midfielder Johnny Cardoso who plays for Internacional in Brazil has been linked with a move to Spain with Real Betis.
According to Onda Betica, “The negotiations between the player Johnny Cardoso and Real Betis continue to progress… many negotiations have been advanced in recent days. And so much so that Johnny Cardoso’s agents were at Villamarin for Betis vs Getafe last Wednesday.”
Johnny was born in New Jersey but grew up in Brazil and has six caps for the USMNT. After making over 100 appearances for Internacional it now looks like the right time to play European soccer.
A move to Betis would be a big step in his career. The Spanish club are currently 6th in La Liga, so should be playing in the Europa League next season.
