How Houston Astros fans made a mess of Carlos Correa’s return

Houston Astros fans booed Carlos Correa in his recent return to Minute Maid Park, which came off as odd to say the least.

Carlos Correa spent seven seasons in Houston, was former prized prospect, and won a World Series with the team in 2017. He turned down far less money in what would’ve been an Astros return, to sign elsewhere. It’s hard to blame him, especially given the amount of success he had there.

Correa signed a short-term contract with the Twins, only to opt out last season and eventually receive a version of the megadeal he was seeking in Minnesota. It was a long journey to that point, but Correa appreciates everything the Astros have done for him, and handled his exit with class. Houston fans have, for the most part, done the same.

For the most part.

Over the weekend, Correa was booed at Minute Maid Park. It was an odd switch from his previous visits back to his old stomping grounds.

Why did Houston Astros fans boo Carlos Correa?

Over the weekend, Correa said the following about Houston baseball fans:

“I want to thank them for all the support thru the years I represented Houston and the Astros. They were great to me and they’re still great to me,” Correa said. “I live in Houston in the offseason. When I’m n the mall…going out…they always show their appreciation.”

Correa said that on Monday, prior to the Twins eventual win over the Astros. In that game, he received rare boos from fans of his former team. It’s unclear exactly why, but the fanbase seems split on the matter.

For some, it’s a right of passage.

For others, Correa deserved better.

These thoughts were echoed by many who weren’t in attendance on Monday. We’ll see if those same feelings will be reflected the rest of the series, but through one game, it’s tough not to have a bad taste in your mouth if you’re an Astros supporter.
