Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat

29. Kyle Shanahan – San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers might be one of the unluckiest teams in the NFL. They were stuck with a quarterback throwing with his non-dominant hand in the NFC Championship Game, and this was already their third-string quarterback. It was a rough game, but it brought out the creativity of Kyle Shanahan.
It wasn’t his best day, but it showed that the 49ers’ best asset is the one with the clipboard. The 49ers are a contender every year because of Shanahan. Going into this year, there are major injury questions at the team’s most important position. Is Brock Purdy healthy? Can Trey Lance finally live up to his draft slot? Then, there’s Sam Darnold. Analysts are actually saying that Shanahan has the ability to get competence out of Sam Darnold.
This is a player who had no career left. Now, analysts think Shanahan can turn his career around. This is how good this head coach is. He has the best game plans. His playbook is amazing. His assistant coaches constantly become head coaches. This is a head coach that exceeds the value of his players.
This is a rarity in today’s NFL. Most teams would be willing to fire the head coach for just about anything. However, the 49ers would legitimately be a bottom-feeder with the wrong coach. Now, they are an NFC contender.
