The youth movement is here in Cincinnati, OH. The Cincinnati Reds have seen the debuts of six of their top 30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline. This includes top prospects Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain and Andrew Abbott, all of whom have franchise-changing potential.

This has caused the Reds to surge up the standings, especially in the struggling NL Central. This will result in the Reds parting ways with some of their aging veterans in order to make room for better players and a few more prospects that are on the way.

As a result, these three players won’t be in the organization past the MLB Trade Deadline.

Reds Rumors: Shortstop Kevin Newman won’t survive the trade deadline

This shouldn’t come as a shock to anybody. The left side of the Reds infield is solidified for years to come with rookie sensations Matt McLain and Elly De La Cruz holding it down. The Reds also feature multiple other top prospects that play shortstop, like Edwin Arroyo and Noelvi Marte.

The fact of the matter is the Reds infield is far too crowded to continue to carry an aging veteran that doesn’t hit as well as any of their starters. With the return of Joey Votto and Nick Senzel coming soon, the infield will just become more crowded. Infield prospect Christian Encarnacion-Strand is on the cusp of his MLB call-up as well.

Newman has been serviceable for the Reds in 2023, providing an excellent bat against left-handed pitching. Newman has been a versatile defender, playing every position across the infield this season. But those two features are the only two plus aspects of his game.

This trade likely won’t be a part of a blockbuster move, though he has the potential to be a smaller piece in a big trade. There are plenty of teams that could use a versatile defender that crushes left-handed pitching. For teams with openings across the infield, Newman is going to be a very interesting option.
