Omaha, Nebraska has been the home to some of baseball’s most emotional and iconic moments during the College World Series.
Omaha, Nebraska has been the home site for the Men’s College World Series, packing the stands every year and curating pure emotion with every pitch.
The tournament officially begins Friday, June 16 at 2 p.m. ET with TCU and Oral Roberts taking the field. It’s the Horned Frogs sixth appearance since 2010, while the Golden Eagles made history as just the third team to ever reach the MCWS as a No. 4 seed in their own region.
Here are some things to know about the Men’s College World Series and how it ended up in Omaha.
How long has the College World Series been played in Omaha?
The first three years of the College World Series began outside of Nebraska. The first two were in Kalamazoo, Michigan and the last before Omaha was in Wichita, KS.
Around the time, Johnny Rosenblatt was the mayor of Omaha and was very instrumental in the demand for a baseball team in the city. The original concept was for a minor league baseball team but instead wove the NCAA into it in 1950 and he instead petitioned for the MCWS.
For many years, the legendary Rosenblatt Stadium was the site for the College World Series, beginning in 1950. But it was torn down to make room for the new TD Ameritrade Stadium, which opened in 2011. It was later changed in name to Charles Schwab Field.
Some of the problems with the stadium include aging and continuous problems with seating Since, they have had the series played every year, except for 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It isn’t kept vacant during the regular season, though, as Creighton University plays all of their regular season games inside Charles Schwab Stadium but has yet to play inside the stadium as a participant in the MCWS.
College World Series: What attractions are around the game?
Prior to and during games, there is a “CWS Fan Fest”, where fans can enjoy festivals, to go with interactive games and live music.
If you attend the Omaha Zoo, they will have an infield, recreating the old Rosenblatt Stadium in the middle of the zoo’s parking lot. An ideal place for children to swing for the fences and create their own MCWS moments in Rosenblatt.
Another unique view is the CWS statue outside the stadium, signifying four players celebrating a victory, sculpted back in 1999. The stadium sells some of the most unique concession stand food, including the Bada Bing Burger, Home Plate-Meatball Slider, Out of the Pork Fries and The Home Plate BBQ Platter.
