It appears that the Oakland Athletics remembered that they’re the Oakland Athletics this past week. After a seven game win streak they have now dropped five in a row, now sitting19-55 as they head to the road for a three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians have lost to straight series and are 33-38, two games behind Minnesota for the AL Central lead.

This matchup pits 1-6 Luis Medina making his ninth start for the A’s and 2-2 Aaron Civale going for the seventh time for Cleveland this year. Medina has a 7.55 ERA and Civale a 2.67. Let’s check out the odds.

Athletics vs. Guardians odds, run line and total

Athletics vs. Guardians prediction and pick

In the month of June these two teams have been far better on offense given where they’ve been all year. For the month Oakland is 23rd in OPS and runs scored, which believe it or not is an improvement from where they are for the season. Cleveland is much better at 13th in runs and ninth in OPS, but they are 26th in home runs with 13 and Oakland in 28th with 11.

The past week, Oakland is back to last in runs scored with just 11 and 28th with a .575 OPS. Even Ryan Noda who has been their best hitter for stretches this month, especially during their win streak, is struggling mightily. He has just five hits in the past week, none for extra bases and only one RBI. That lineup will have little chance against Civale and Cleveland’s bullpen which is second in ERA at 3.02.

Luis Medina has been awful on the mound for Oakland, but his FIP is 6.08, well over a run lower than his ERA. That’s a good sign going forward and against Cleveland with Jose Ramirez cooling off some this past week, he should get through this outing okay. With Oakland’s offensive impotence, I’ll take the under in the first game of the series.
