Another former Green Bay Packers offensive player is available… cue Aaron Rodgers picking up the phone.

There has been speculation galore about New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers teaming up with former Packers teammates on his new team. It started with Davante Adams, and has ballooned to include names like Jake Kumerow.

At least New York went and traded for Randall Cobb to satiate Rodgers’ appetite for old friends.

Now there’s another Rodgers familiarity lurking about on the open market. The question is: will the Jets make the call?

Will the New York Jets reunite Aaron Rodgers with another former teammate?

Veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis is still looking for a new home for what would be his 18th NFL season. The 39-year-old has only played for two teams during his historically long career: the Jacksonville Jaguars and (you guessed it!) the Green Bay Packers.

Lewis spent the last five years blocking and receiving for Rodgers. He has been a key offensive staple for the Packers, even if his numbers don’t leap off the page. That has always been the rub with Lewis: he’s a tremendous blocker and football fundamentalist, but he won’t explode for 100-yard nights.

It’s no secret why teams haven’t been banging down Lewis’ door. He’s 39 years old and football is not a sport known for its longevity. It’s tough to hold up physically, even mentally, as such an advanced age.

Of course, Lewis has extreme self-confidence and he’s just waiting on a call.

As he told AP News: “If you just look at my film from the last three years, there’s no decline in what I’m able to do. I’m the best blocking tight end out there.”

There is undeniable value in a player with Lewis’ experience and leadership skill in the tight end room. Even if he doesn’t play, perhaps the Jets could benefit from his wealth of institutional knowledge. Rodgers would no doubt love to have an old running mate around too.

That said, the Jets’ tight end depth chart is already a little crowded. Tyler Conklin is expected to operate as Rodgers’ primary target at the position while C.J. Uzomah is another hulking red zone target and, unfortunately for Lewis, a very talented blocker. Jeremy Ruckert and Zach Kuntz also populate the Jets’ roster and there’s very little need to employ five tight ends.

Lewis’ best opportunity might lie with a different team. There’s a chance he finds himself waiting into the regular season as teams continue to evaluate personnel through training camp. He’s not the only high-profile free agent still without a team: Dalvin Cook, Ezekiel Elliott, and DeAndre Hopkins are all waiting in line too.

That said, Lewis did play all 17 games for Green Bay last season. He has gas left in the tank.
