MLB Rumors: Rockies trade Mike Moustakas to the Angels

Give the Los Angeles Angels front office some credit. Despite the possibility of losing Shohei Ohtani this offseason, they are doing everything they can to help this Angels team compete right now. Trades for Eduardo Escobar and Mike Moustakas — two stable veterans who should add postseason experience to the infield — are solid additions as the stove is just now heating up.

The Angels defeated the Rockies by the lopsided scoreline of 25-1 on Saturday night. At some point during that affair, these two general managers decided to discuss a trade for Moustakas. Does any of that feel odd to anyone else?

Evidently, Colorado saw everything they needed from its team on Saturday. The time is now to sell. Here’s the complete trade.

Moustakas has a 101 wRC+ in just 136 plate appearances. He hits for average and can spray the ball anywhere around the outfield at his best. With the Rockies, his primary role was to back up C.J. Cron, though he received far more playing time than expected due to injuries. He’s in the final year  of a prove-it deal.

Van Scoyoc is 23 years old and still in A-ball. While he pitches to a high ground-ball rate and has a sub-3 ERA, his path to the majors remains a tough one, as he’ll be reaching his prime in a season or two and still has a long way to go.

For now, the Angels win this trade, as they’ve dealt with many injuries on their infield including Anthony Rendon. Moustakas provides them with some depth and postseason experience, and they got him for relatively cheap.

Trade Grades:

Angels: B

Rockies: B-
