Eagles: Jalen Hurts refuses to excuse himself over Super Bowl loss

The leader of the defending NFC champion Eagles hopes to guide his team back to the Super Bowl. Jalen Hurts still has last year’s loss to the Chiefs on his mind.

The Philadelphia Eagles scored 35 points in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs and it still wasn’t enough to secure an NFL title. Quarterback Jalen Hurts enjoyed a tremendous outing but Nick Sirianni’s club set a dubious mark by totaling the most points by a team in a losing effort on Super Sunday.

Hurts finished the afternoon with 304 yards through the air and one touchdown without an interception. He also set a new Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a quarterback, totaling 70 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. He also ran for a two-point conversion after the Eagles’ final touchdown of the game. It was quite the performance, and yet the team fell short.

In a recent interview with JAKIB Sports, Eagles’ center Jason Kelce touched on a number of subjects. The six-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro and Super Bowl LII champion pivot talked about his talented teammate and what is still sticking in his crawl.

Of course, there was that fumble. It was not only the turnover of Super Bowl LVII, it was the lone turnover of the postseason for Sirianni’s team. Early in the second quarter, Hurts put the ball on the ground and Chiefs’ Nick Bolton scooped up the prize and ran 36 yards for a touchdown. Instead of extending a 14-7 lead, it was suddenly a tie game. It’s little wonder that Hurts is still beating himself up.

The Eagles will be attempting to do a few things that won’t be and haven’t been easy. First, the club will look to repeat as division winners. The last club to repeat as NFC East champions was indeed Philadelphia, but that was nearly a decade ago when head coach Andy Reid guided the Birds to four straight first-place finishes from 2001-04.

There’s also the attempt to win Super Bowl LVIII one year after falling to the Chiefs on Super Sunday. The last team to achieve that feat was the 2018 New England Patriots, who lost to the Eagles in 2017 (LII) and went on to beat the Rams in 2018 (LIII). However, it has only happened three time in Super Bowl history.

Of course, this is an organization that has reached the playoffs five of the past six seasons and done it with different head coaches and quarterbacks. Bouncing back shouldn’t be much of a problem for Hurts and these Birds.
