Rocket Mortgage Classic DraftKings picks 2023: Best PGA DFS golf lineup
Rocket Mortgage Classic DraftKings picks with top plays and fades for Detroit Golf Club and building the best PGA DFS lineup for the week.
After getting the US Open and then the designated Travelers, it might feel like a letdown going now to the Rocket Mortgage Classic this week. Not so much, though. This is the best field we’ve seen yet at Detroit Golf Club in the still-new event’s young history. And that should could PGA DFS players and golf fans excited.
Tony Finau is back as the defending champion but he’s joined by the likes of Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and more. That gives us a fun slate to make our Rocket Mortgage Classic DraftKings picks.
So let’s dive into it with our PGA DFS picks and lineup with our top plays and fades for each price range and then building that DraftKings lineup.
Rocket Mortgage Classic DraftKings picks for PGA DFS lineups: Top Plays
$10,000: Justin Thomas ($10,000) – There is a little bit of gut feel going on right now, but we saw the approach play and short game buoy Justin Thomas to a Top 10 finish last week. That’s the signs I needed and, though his price is bumped by a weaker field, this is a great spot to potentially be early-ish on JT bouncing back, especially when he needs to rack up good finishes. Also Consider: Rickie Fowler ($10,400)
$9,000: Hideki Matsuyama ($9,600) – I was on Hideki Matsuyama last week and it’s hard not to have that still be the case. He’s gaining 0.94 strokes on approach in his last 20 rounds and, if he putts well, he can win this event. I love his game and the trend lines right now, so he’s a great buy at this price in a weak-ish field. Also Consider: Tom Kim ($9,800), Cam Davis ($9,300)
$8,000: Ludvig Aberg ($8,700) – Going hard on Ludvig Aberg felt like it might be going out on a limb this week, but that turns out to not be the case. Detroit Golf Club has often been a test of driving distance and capitalizing, which is the rookie’s game to a tee. Aberg has been gearing up in his first starts as a pro and this week should be a coming-out party for the Swede. Also Consider: Stephan Jaeger ($8,900), Chris Kirk ($8,500), Byeong Hun An ($8,200), Austin Eckroat ($8,000)
$7,000: Gordon Sargent ($7,500) – The fact of the matter is that Gordon Sargent has an elite ceiling but is not reliable yet. When I consider this course being good for long drivers and ball strikers, though, the amateur from Vanderbilt seems like the perfect fit. His short game remains a worry, but I think he has a big week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Also Consider: Aaron Rai ($7,800), Nicolai Hojgaard ($7,700), J.J. Spaun ($7,500), Sam Stevens ($7,300), Luke List ($7,100), Carson Young ($7,000)
$6,000: Vincent Norrman ($6,900) – Once again, diving into the $6K range this week isn’t my favorite, but it might also be necessary. But Vincent Norrman is intriguing. He’s a long hitter off of the tee and he’s gaining on approach over the last 20 rounds solidly too. It’s definitely a slight flier to play him but the trends suggest he could be a great fit to pop this week. Also Consider: Ben Martin ($6,900), Lucas Glover ($6,600)
Rocket Mortgage Classic DraftKings picks for PGA DFS lineups: Top Fades
$10,000: Tony Finau ($10,900) – The putter has been absolutely ice-cold for the defending champ in Detroit, losing 0.83 strokes over his last 20 rounds. Meanwhile, the finishes have mirrored that as he hasn’t finished inside the Top 30 in any of his last four starts. That’s a tough scene and, for the top-priced player in this slate, I’m not biting.
$9,000: Sungjae Im ($9,400) – In the last five starts, Sungjae Im has three missed cuts and a T29 and T41 finish. His approach play hasn’t been at the level we expect from him at this point in his career and the rest of the game has been just fine or worse. I’m not huge on the $9K range overall, but definitely will not have any exposure to Sungjae this week.
$8,000: Tom Hoge ($8,400) – Hoge is often a favorite in the betting and DFS communities but I can’t buy it right now. His approach play has dipped a bit from its top heights this season and the short game is still a worry. Moreover, he has two missed cuts and a T64 in three starts at this event. I’m good on that in this rich $8K range.
$7,000: Justin Suh ($7,900) – When you look at the finishes for Justin Suh, you understand the pricing here. With five straight made cuts and three top 30s over that span. But so much have that has been coming with the putter. He’s losing nearly a full stroke tee-to-green and in each of those three categories over the last 20 rounds and, at a tournament where scoring could be super low, that’s not a model I’m going to be a part of.
Rocket Mortgage Classic: Best DraftKings golf PGA DFS lineup
- Justin Thomas ($10,000)
- Hideki Matsuyama ($9,600)
- Ludvig Aberg ($8,700)
- Gordon Sargent ($7,500)
- Sam Stevens ($7,300)
- Vincent Norrman ($6,900)
Very stars and scrubs this week but I think there’s a ton of value in that, especially with the way DraftKings ownership is likely to shake out for the high-priced guys.
Stevens is the only player who wasn’t talked about as a top play this week but he’s in a similar role to the other cheap guys in this lineup. He hits it long off of the tee and pops with his ball striking. It’s a cross-your-fingers situation with the short game but the talent and tee-to-green game is good enough for me to believe in him potentially tearing up what could be an easy course for him.
