Red Sox rumors: 3 players who won’t be on the roster by the trade deadline
The Red Sox could part ways with a few key pieces before the trade deadline, partly because of how stacked the AL East has been this year.
The Boston Red Sox have seen some unfortunate circumstances this year. These circumstances are completely out of their control. They reside in the best division in the entire league, as each of the other four teams in their division are at least seven games over .500. The Red Sox are 13.5 games out of first place in the AL East, leaving them hardly as contenders.
This tough division, compared with them underachieving a bit could result in the Red Sox selling a bit of their roster in a retool rather than a rebuild at the MLB Trade Deadline.
With this being said, the Red Sox could depart from these three pieces in an attempt to plan for the future.
Red Sox rumors: Adam Duvall could have a new home before the trade deadline
When the Red Sox acquired Adam Duvall in free agency, the main intention was to add a slugging rental player for one year, with the potential to have Duvall sign back if things went well for both sides. On Duvall’s end, things are going well. Since returning from injury, he currently has a career-high in average, OBP and OPS, making it one of the best starts to a season that the veteran has ever had. The same can’t be said for Boston as a whole.
Boston has seen their playoff odds drop to just 12% according to FanGraphs. FanGraphs also has their odds to win the division at 0.2%, with the most likely outcome being that they finish in last in the AL East. This has caused the Red Sox to begin exploring the option of selling at the trade deadline. They wouldn’t likely blow their roster up, but they could sell some rentals to contending teams.
One of those players would be Adam Duvall. Duvall would be a quality piece for a bunch of different playoff contenders, as he is having his best season in years, he has playoff experience, and he wouldn’t be too expensive as a rental. The Red Sox will likely part with the outfielder, which would signify they are waving the white flag in 2023.
