The Mets have been a disaster in 2023. In order to right the ship, they’re going to need to part ways with a few players on their roster.

The Mets are paying their active roster over $260 million this year. Despite spending a ridiculous amount of money, the 2023 season has been incredibly underwhelming and quite disastrous. They have found themselves with just a seven percent chance to make the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.

This kind of shocking decline may result in the Mets joining the bottom of the league and becoming sellers at the trade deadline.

With it likely the Mets sell a good chunk of their valuable pieces as well as their expiring contracts, they have a lot of players that may not be safe. While their roster could see a major shakeup, there’s a chance they don’t press the panic button. Either way, there will be roster moves before the August 1st trade deadline.

Mets rumors: Max Scherzer’s days may be numbered in a Mets uniform

Max Scherzer has absolutely dominated the Mets trade rumor headlines, for good reason. Scherzer may be nearing 40 years old, but he is still an ace caliber pitcher, with a proven track record. If Scherzer becomes truly available, he would headline a loaded trade deadline in 2023.

But the big question there is if Scherzer becomes available. He isn’t guaranteed to be moved by the Mets. But the idea of trading him certainly makes sense. The 38-year-old has already made it known that he would waive his no-trade clause if the Mets are pursuing a deal, likely to a team he approves of. With him showing the acceptance of a move, New York would need to think long and hard on this idea.

Trading Scherzer would provide the Mets with a few positives. The negatives are obvious, they’re losing one of the better pitchers in the league. But the positives would provide the team with an intriguing option.

Trading him means they would clear $43.3 million this year and next year, assuming he accepts his player option. This would be huge for their cap space. Along with that, the prospect return on Max Scherzer with likely two years of performance, would be a good one. The Mets could return a top 100 prospect, along with other pieces in a deal with him. This Trade just makes sense for a selling New York team.
