Mets rumors: David Robertson could be a part of a new bullpen before the trade deadline

If the Mets wave the white flag for the 2023 season, which should happen over the next month, David Robertson is as good as gone in their bullpen. He likely wouldn’t be back in New York next year, as Edwin Diaz would return as their closer and Robertson would likely opt to be paid as a closer, not as a setup man. His 2023 season, even nearing age 40, has proved he still has the ability to be a closer on any of the contending teams.

Robertson will likely be pursued as a setup man this season, but that spot would only be temporary, as a rental, as he is on a one-year contract. In free agency, the veteran will more than likely opt to sign another one-year deal to work as somebody’s closer.

But that’s next year. This year, a contending team, like the Dodgers or Astros will look to boost their bullpen with the $10 million contract attached to David Robertson. His 2.00 ERA and near 1.00 WHIP makes him attractive to a ton of teams, showing his true ability to pitch and get hitters out consistently. He is striking out over four batters per one walk, which displays his swing and miss ability paired with his veteran level command.
