The 2023 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest triumphantly happened after reports came out that it would be canceled. Here’s who won.

Torrential downpours and flash flooding put the annual Fourth of July Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in jeopardy for several hours on Tuesday. The contest, despite reports of cancelation, was rescheduled for 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time at Coney Island, and the Fourth of July was saved.

Joey Chestnut was going for his eighth annual title in a row and 16th title total dating back to his first win in 2007.

Here’s how the event went down after the lengthy delay and a quick summary of how it happened.

Lightning, torrential downpours, and flood warnings sent the event into an extremely long delay.

Joey Chestnut won the 2023 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes’ time.

Chestnut, a massive favorite for the event, jumped out to a four-dog lead and pushed his lead to 5-6 three minutes in. His lead hit seven dogs by the halfway mark. His lead past the double-digit mark with three minutes left.

Given the two-plus hour delay on the contest, there is a mountain of circumstances against the eaters and contest runners today. The preparation timeline was thrown out of whack, and hot dogs needed to be recooked by Nathan’s with the timeline thrown completely off at Coney Island.
