The New York Yankees were set to host the Baltimore Orioles at 1:05 p.m. ET on July 4, but that has been delayed due to rain in New York.

On July 4, baseball fans who are off from work usually have the opportunity to catch an afternoon game, whether at home or the stadium. The New York Yankees were set to host the Baltimore Orioles for the second game of their four-game series. The night prior, New York overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Baltimore 6-3.

The Fourth of July game was set to begin at 1:05 p.m. ET, with Clarke Schmidt scheduled to start on the mound against Baltimore’s Kyle Gibson.

Instead, the team announced that they would not start the game on time due to a rain delay.

UPDATE: The Yankees announced that first pitch will begin at 1:40 p.m. ET.

Yankees rain delay update: Yankees-Orioles start time after weather delay

12:57 p.m. ET: The team’s official Twitter account announced that first pitch for their game against the Orioles will take place at 1:40 p.m. ET.

This game between AL East rivals wasn’t the only event in New York that had to be delayed due to rain and lightning. The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest was taking place in Coney Island, but they entered a delay due to rain and lightning. Shortly afterward, ABC 7 New York announced that the men’s contest was canceled due to lightning.

The Yankees are looking to bounce back and take a series after losing two of three this past weekend to the St. Louis Cardinals. Prior to that loss, they had won their previous three series against the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and Oakland Athletics.

Baltimore stood as a challenge for New York, considering that they were 49-33 entering Monday’s game. They held second-place in the AL East and as of the morning of July 4, they held a three game lead over the Houston Astros and New York for the first AL Wild Card spot.
