Adam Wainwright hits IL, but declares he ain’t done yet

Adam Wainwright might be wishing he went out with his buddies Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols, who retired last year in a blaze of glory. Instead, Wainwright got his own farewell season, slated to say goodbye to the playing portion of his baseball career after 18 years in the big leagues, all with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Except, it’s not exactly a pleasant farewell. Wainwright started the year on the injured list and since debuting, it’s been one of his most dismal years yet. He has an ugly 7.66 ERA, 1.994 WHIP, and a 5.89 FIP. He’s surrendering more hits than hee ever has in a single season (14.6 per nine innings). Not to mention the Cardinals in general have struggled all year long.

Wainwright now hits the injured list after lasting just three and one-third innings in his most recent start, giving up seven hits and four earned runs.

Wainwright will be remembered as a Cardinal legend, no matter how bad this year turns out for him and the team. He has far too much goodwill for it to be completely wiped in one bad season.

Wainwright more or less ruled out being pushed into his planned retirement early as a result of the IL stint, though.

“That’s not the end,” Wainwright told reporters after the news came out.

The official designation for Wainwright is shoulder inflammation.
