Chicago White Sox star Luis Robert Jr. suffered an injury in the Home Run Derby on Monday night, and will not play in the MLB All-Star Game as a result.

Luis Robert Jr., were he on a team that was not the struggling, under-achieving Chicago White Sox, would be among the top MVP candidates in baseball. Unfortunately, he does play for those same White Sox.

Robert has one hell of an injury history, so when fans on the south side of Chicago see him miss a game, they’re right to be concerned. During the Home Run Derby, Robert suffered what for now seems to be a minor injury, and will sit out the All-Star Game as a result.

For Chicago baseball fans, it’s just another reason not to watch the Midsummer Classic.

White Sox: Luis Robert Jr. injured in Home Run Derby

Chicago is expected to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline in late July, but per reports will not consider dealing what the believe are members of their core — including Robert and Dylan Cease. As talented as Robert is, he’s injury prone. While “made of glass” may be an overstatement, Robert Jr. has given White Sox fans plenty to freak out about over the years. Now that he’s healthy and finally performing, one can only hope this setback is minor.

Per Chicago, the injury is considered day-to-day.

“During the first round of Monday’s Home Run Derby, Luis Robert felt tightness in his right calf. He underwent an MRI in Seattle and is listed as day-to-day. Robert will not play in tonight’s All-Star Game as a precaution and will be evaluated again before the season re-starts Friday in Atlanta.”

The Home Run Derby is one of the best and most-renowned competitions in sports, but when players swing too hard, it can often lead to injury or slumps down the line. Robert is just the latest victim.
