The two-time defending champions headline Group E with the 2019 runners-up, and two World Cup debutants rounding out the group.

All eyes are on Vlatko Andonovski’s No. 1 ranked USWNT. Following a concerning test against Wales before the team headed off to New Zealand, the stars and stripes are being surrounded with a lot of questions. No team on the men’s or women’s side has ever lifted the World Cup on three straight occasions.

That is what the United States are aiming to do. With talented young individuals like Sophia Smith up top, and Naomi Girma in the backline accompanied by veterans, the tools are there to get the job done. Possession with a purpose, and breaking down low blocks. If this U.S team can accomplish those two things, its continued world dominance is likely.

Standing in the USWNT’s way of the knockout stages is three other nations including the country that made it all the way to the final in 2019. Following the disappointment of the Euros under Mark Parsons, Andries Jonker is now at the helm of this Dutch team. Though this team has plenty of world-class talent, Esmee Brugts’ remarkable goal against Iceland is the reason why it is here.

Without Vivianne Miedema, it is going to have to be a team effort in order to find the back of the net consistently. Since their 1-0 defeat to the Germans in April, the Dutch have demonstrated an ability to do just that. Le Oranje have outscored their opposition 9-1 in their last two contests with Paris Saint-Germain’s Lieke Martens leading the way with three of those goals.

The only group with two debutants in this expanded Women’s World Cup is Group E. Carole Costa’s penalty against Cameroon in the inter-confederation playoffs punched the Portuguese’s ticket down under. Since that historic triumph in New Zealand, Portugal’s friendly results have been impressive. Francisco Neto’s side drew both Wales and England before it defeated Ukraine in the country’s final contest before the results matter. Out of the Asian Football Confederation, the Vietnamese clinched a berth into the 32 teams with a 2-1 win over rivals Chinese Taipei. Mai Duc Chung’s side are guided by Huynh Nhu, and recently won gold at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.
