MLB Rumors: Former Yankee could be Red Sox trade deadline savior
With the Boston Red Sox on the prowl for quality starting depth, they could poach a former Yankee to boost their pitching rotation.
The Red Sox suffered major losses when starters Chris Sale, Tanner Houck, and Garrett Whitlock picked up injuries this past season. One of their most glaring needs is at starting pitcher, and the club could be taking a look at several intriguing candidates heading into the trade deadline.
White Sox’s Lucas Giolito and Padres’ Blake Snell pose as potential fits. The latest rumor, however, surrounds Cardinals’ Jordan Montgomery — could he be the savior the Red Sox need to make a late-season push to the playoffs?
Currently, Boston’s rotation features James Paxton, Brayan Bello, and others who are holding down the fort but are otherwise uninspiring playoff starters. Depending on when the club gets its key pitchers back, the Red Sox may be thinking of pursuing a quality starter like Montgomery to work its way up the AL East.
Montgomery, who spent six seasons with the Yankees, has a 3.14 ERA in 2023 and is an all-but-certain trade chip for the down-bad Cards.
